Born John Howard Jones in Southhampton to Welsh parents, he grew up in Rhiwbina, Cardiff, South Wales where he attended Whitchurch Grammar School.

He took piano lessons at 7 and by the time of his teen years he had relocated to Canada with his family where he joined Warrior, his first Band. On moving back to The U.K. he spent a year at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

New Song, his first single, was released in 1983 the same year in which he made his first Top Of The Pops appearence. The following year produced a Number 1 Album and four more singles hits.

1984 saw the release of Like to get to know you well which reached number 4 in the U.K. His Live Aid performance, Hide and Seek, was made while playing a Piano owned by Freddie Mercury.
