Do you like Pina Colada?

  • Sharebar

Rupert Holmes was born in Northwich, Cheshire on 24th February 1947. At the age of six, Holmes moved to Nanuet, New York. He attended Nyack High School and then The Manhattan School of Music where he majored in Clarinet. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) brought fame and wealth to Holmes but it is felt that this song overshadows his more serious work. A Tony Award in 1985 for his Musical, Drood, shows his true pedigree as a serious writer.

Released in The U.K. on 12th January 1980, this catchy tune reached Number 23. In The U.S. however it was number One at the end of December 1979 and then again in the second week of January 1980 after K.C. and The Sunshine Band, with Please Don’t Go, knocked ot from the top spot.  The song was inspired by an ad in the personal section of a paper. “I thought, what would happen to me if I answered this ad? I’d go and see if it was my own wife who was bored with me” remembers Holmes.

This is a true forgotten Gem of the 80s, if you haven’t listened to it for a while it’s worth it if not just for the Novelty value.
