The fault is, this song is faultless.

Before changing their name to The Associates, Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine formed The Ascorbic Ones in 1976 and then recrded as Mental Torture in 1979.

Their 1982 single, Club Country, is the next in our Forgotten Gem series. Reaching number 13 in The U.K. the song says much about vanity, friendships and the lengths some will go to be something that they really aren’t. It is rumoured that the band never wrote a song without a hangover. For most getting out of bed would be enough of a struggle, to write songs of ths quality in such a state demands a certain genius. The catchy tune with the use of violin is quite uniqe.

Their Top of The Pops performances show a Band clearly enjoying themselves and are well worth watching.

Unfortunately, Rankin left the band in 1983 which also saw the end of chart success.

After a bout of depression and his Mother’s death Mackenzie committed suicide in 1997, two months before his 40th Birthday. He lives on in this great track.

80slegends salutes a talent sadly lost.
