The beginning of the 80's saw the goth scene really take off, classed as post punk, and heavily influenced by bands from the 70s, such as Velvet Underground.
The goth fashion was mainly made up of Black hair,(normally spiked), or hair with bright colours put through black, black clothing, black nail varnish, black boots and very heavy black eyeliner. Also metal crosses and studded wristbands were worn too, all this could be obtained from places like Carnaby street in London, or market stalls.
There were several Goth bands during the 80's, but also some bands that music was similar unyet they were put in a different genre. The Music was quite dark and depressing at times.
The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsee and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Theatre of Hate, The Damned, Dead or Alive, Shakespears Sister, Killing Joke, The Stranglers, Hazel O'connor, and even very early Adam Ant.
The ones that we thought may have been Goth but were'nt are
The Smiths, Hayzee Fantayzee, Toyah, Transvision Vamp.
There were also a few films that had the Gothic Horror theme to them.
The Hunger – with David Bowie
Interview with a Vampire – Tom Cruise
The Lost Boys – Kiefer Sutherland
Hellraiser – Doug Bradley
Labrynth – David Bowie – altho more of a fairy tale horror
The Gothic scene was definately a big part of the 80's and even nowadays there are some teenagers out there that are still dressing as Goths and enjoy listening to the Goth music that we grew up with.
