Written by Edie Brickell and Kenny Withrow, recorded by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, What I Am somehow only peaked at Number 31 in The U.K. singles chart in 1989. The track earned more success in The States where it reached number seven on The Billboard Charts. It was also ranked at Number seventy-seven on VH1′s list of Top 100 One Hit Wonders.
Edie Brickell was born in Oak Leaf, Dallas Texas on 10th March 1966 and attended the Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. In 1985 she decided, that one night, she would get on stage with a local folk rock group, New Bohemians, for which she would become lead singer. Brickell played a folk singer in the Tom Cruise film Born on The Fourth of July featuring on the Film’s soundtrack with a cover of Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall. Brickell married Paul Simon in 1992 after meeting him on Saturday Night Live.
