Are Friends… likely to turn up?

  • Sharebar

Let’s hope so! True 80s Legend Gary Numan has announced a new tour for the Autumn coinciding with the release of his new album ‘Dead Sun Rising’. See http://www.numan.co.uk/ for dates.

Following two U.K. Number One hits, ‘Are Friends Electric?’ (with Tubeway Army) and ‘Cars’ in the Summer of 1979, Gary was at the fore-front of the 80s New Wave and 80s New Romantic scene.

However, Gary knew that his time at the top would be fleeting and never took fame as seriously some of the other 80s artists.

And although his music videos would suggest otherwise, the percevied aloof, moody image was more down to his being conscious of his teeth than any desire to be cool.

Famously, he indulged his passion for flying as much as his music, setting up an air taxi and cargo company with his family. Just goes to prove that you should always have a hobby!

Yes, the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire was packed to the rafters with Numanoids!!!
The set he played was quite diverse, interspersing new tracks from “Dead Son Rising” with old Tubeaway Army tracks such as “My Shadow in Vain”, “Are Friends Electric?” and the inevitable “Cars”. He has a new bass guitarist (Tim Muddiman has now moved from bass gyuitar to lead) and the general sound of the new tracks is quite heavily influenced by Ade Fenton (I’m really not sure it’s really a good thing or not!).
Gary performed with his usual 100% dedication and he even had time to bring his 2 daughters on stage with him as apparently it was Raven’s 7th birthday the following Monday – the whole place sung happy birthday to her.
Overall a good night for a Numan fan but a concern over the direction the new album’s songs are headign in (except “The Fall”).
