Awash with Adam Ant in Bath
Review of Adam Ant, The Good,The Mad and The Lovely Posse Date at Bath Komedia 23.4.13.
This was my 3rd concert in as many years seeing Adam Ant and after a brilliant concert in my home town of Swindon, I wasn’t expecting it to be as good but wanted to see some of the new tracks from his new album performed live. It completely exceeded my expectations.
Against the backdrop of Adam Ant and a picture of the “Blueback Hussar”, the introduction music came on, a classical piece that I cannot remember leading into the speech by Lord Cardigan from The Charge of The Light Brigade”. This is the film where Adam Ant got his original jacket from in the Kings of the Wild Frontier era.
The band all walked on and then Adam burst onto the stage in full Ant regalia and the first song was Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter from the new album delivered to rapturous screams and cheers and he was back home, where he belongs on stage performing to the loyal Ant fans. He then went into brilliant performances of Dog Eat Dog, Ants Invasion, Kings of the Wild Frontier interspersed with his new songs Cool Zombie, HardMenToughBlokes and Particularly outstanding was Shrink but then that is my personal favourite from the new album. He does not address the crowd often but did comment on how in recent interviews, he was always asked whether he was going to perform any of his old hits. A roll of the eyes, a wry smile and then he introduced a song which he said was very dear to his heart, Ant Music!
So many songs to mention and remember but they included a very beautifully sung Wonderful, Desperate But Not Serious, Goody Two Shoes and earlier ones from the album Dirk Wears White Sox like Cleopatra, Never Trust a Man with Egg on His Face, Car Trouble and several B Sides – Fall Out, Beat My Guest, Whip in My Valise, Lady.
At one point he introduces his band, two drummers, two guitarists and his backing singer Georgie Girl looking stunning in a rubber dress. The band were superb. As in every concert he takes off a bandana from his waist which he has tantalisingly wiped his face on and gives it to someone in the audience, that someone happened to be me!
There were two encores met with thunderous applause and excitement. The final two songs being Get It On (T Rex) and finishing with Physical (You’re So).
A totally triumphant night for Adam Ant. He looks and sounds absolutely fantastic and stands and delivers non stop for 2 hours plus. He is back where he belongs and everyone who enjoyed his music in the 80s should not miss seeing him on this tour!
