The Spirit of Radio, Kitcher style
Do You remember `80s Radio?
Martin Kitcher drifts away for a while doing so….
Lets go on a little journey with our ears and our nostalgia zone. It`s 11.30 am and it`s somewhere inthe 1980`s. Simon Bates is on the radio and he`s keeping you company at work as you trudge your way through one of the tasks of the day which is only made do-able via the radio`s entertainment. The battery in the little radio is not as fresh as it might be and in the factory next door , you can`t hear it at all when they run a certain piece of equipment that jams the a.m. signal like a road drill.
You simply can`t wait to see this new infatuation that has stormed into your life, but that won`t be until Friday night after you get paid. You want to make sure you have enough to say, you need to impress your own self image and delight at things and make sure all their friends know too-well- hey? You`re 19 years old, thats the way it`s supposed to be I assume. There`s a cracking song on the radio-it`s not been played before and you know you must own it instantly. Please Mr Bates-please say the name of the band at the end—pleeeeeeease! He does. It`s “Don`t say that`s Just for White Boys” by a band called “Way of the West”-its a groover-its a delight-its innovating-and its saying something that people are starting to talk about with a great groove. Next-there`s a great intro to a great beat-kicking slightly and beautifully not quite tuned horns and you guess correctly what the act is after reading your copy of “The Face” only this morning over breakfast. “Pig Bag” are moving your body. Cemented-transfixed by what you can`t see performing, take the Spandau advice. Work `till your “Musclebound”, a fantastic tune to work too, yes work is feeling like a workout and you are getting productive.
Simon Bates` “Our Tune” slot this morning hadn’t left a dry eye on the factory floor. We were surprised at the new-ness of the tune but it bled our feelings into the perfect zone of a believable- terrible and yet wonderful fairytale. “One Day In Your Life” sang Michael Jackson and we all believed it. Back to now and from the first STOMP of a track on the little tranny and we become Ant people. We forgave Adam for giving himself away to the broader public and are actually thoroughly enjoying the feathers, the drums, the imagined headdresses and have almost forgiven Gary Tibbs for taking the vacant bass guitarist job in the band. Almost.
You wonder if the “Way of The West” single is on 12” or not-but only briefly as pure silence and wonder is required as a bassline from Mick Karn on a single by Japan dominates all in its bizarre and amazing clashes of noted that one would have thought only a sitar was capable of. “The Art of Parties”. There must be one, the picture surrounding the disc pack you have at home, is so wonderful it has to be seen out in!- and you have to wear something like that as soon as possible- you ,once again you require the 12” , just to get the pics bigger and, hey-maybe put a copy on the wall.
How do you remember the `80`s radio?? Was it slightly better just before all the videos and we just had the picture and picture sleeves?

Until next time
