80s Legends wishes Neil Diamond a Happy 70th
The word legend is used far too often but should be saved for those that truly deserve it. Neil Diamond is one such individual. In 1984 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and will be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year. As far as the U.S. Billboard Charts are concerned he is only behind Barbra Streisand and Elton John in terms of success.
As of 2001 he had record sales of 115 million World wide and continues to fill venues where ever he plays. Although the 1980′s saw a dip in record sales the album The Jazz Singer realised three top Ten U.S. Hits.
On a personal note I was fortunate enough to see Neil Diamond live in Auckland, New Zealand in the mid 90′s. A cracking show and a great performance. At one point he thanked UB40 for making Red Red Wine , a song Diamond penned, a great success.
